Location
Argo is a nomadic art school.
Argo is based in Athens, Greece, but our summer program is held in a different place every year.
We choose inspiring, beautiful, and safe places, but we’re not tourists. Every program is deeply rooted in the artistic and cultural traditions of the communities that host us, and we take our responsibility to them very seriously. Engaging with local community artists, artisans, and experts is a core part of the Argo semester.
For our 2025 Summer Program, we are sticking close to home. This program will be in Greece. The exact location is yet to be confirmed, but will be announced soon.
Why Greece?
Ancient and Modern Artist Inspiration
Well, though the country is best known as a holiday destination, it has a deep and rich cultural and artistic heritage. Ancient Greece has, of course, been a source of inspiration for poets, painters, philosophers, architects, and theorists for close to 3,000 years. The mythology and achievements of that time are still ever-present in the modern country.
But there is so much more to this small Mediterranean country. The hippies of the 1960s flocked here, seeking to connect to an authentic way of life based around friendship, love, and community. Recent years have seen an explosion of contemporary art, and Athens (in particular) now has one of the most vibrant art scenes in Europe.
Culture and Landscape
What’s more, the culture and landscape of Greece remain a powerful source of artistic inspiration. There are the colors of the sea and the sky, the food and the wine, and the feeling of the Aegean sea on your skin. There is also something far more important - the people. Greeks have a strong belief in the power of community, and philoxenia (an ancient Greek word meaning “love of strangers”) is still an important part of Greek culture. These are the values that first drew us to Greece, back in 2020, and we’d love to be able to share them with you.
Space to Think and Grow
Greece is an amazing place to study and produce art. The slower pace of life (at least in the Summer!) provides space and time to sit, think, contemplate, paint, write, move, grow, and love. We also have a deep personal connection with this beautiful, fierce, and sometimes baffling country.
